Initiations Program Description:

Initiations programs comprise the introductory level of hockey instruction for the Hanover Wild. There are two programs at the Initiations level: Learn to Play (LTP, also known as Learn to Play Wild) and Wild Mites (also termed House Mites). These programs introduce children to the sport of hockey while developing skating, puck handling (such as passing, receiving, and shooting), and team skills. There is also an emphasis on learning about hockey and having fun in a team-oriented environment.

A committee of HHA Board members and coaches from this level provide oversight and management for Learn to Play and Wild Mites.

Skaters who successfully complete LTP and House Mites usually move up to the U8 Travel Mites.

Learn to Play:

Program overview:

  • This program is for boys and girls ages 4-8. (USA Hockey sets the birth year cut-off for each season at Dec 31.)
  • Designed for children with little or no previous hockey experience.
  • Children should have enough skating ability to balance without assistance and move forward on the ice.
  • On-ice sessions will feature an active clinic-style approach with lots of hands-on coaching and instruction.
  • Learn to Play skaters practice together at every practice.
  • At the LTP level, we understand that you may have other family commitments. Missing a day or weekend is never a problem!

Session overview:

  • SESSIONS: We offer two sessions. Skaters may register for one or both sessions
  • Each session is 9 weeks long
  • Session 1, Saturday, Oct 26 – Sunday, Dec 29 (No practice Thanksgiving weekend);
  • Session 2, Saturday, Jan 4 – Sunday, Mar 1
  • TIMES:
  • We hold practice each Saturday and Sunday.
  • Practices are 8:10 a.m. – 9:10 a.m.
  • FEES: The HHA fee structure reflects projected enrollment and costs of the programs
  • $150 for each session or $250 for both when registered prior to Oct 26.
  • In addition to HHA fees, all players must be registered with USA Hockey before skating in any HHA program. This annual registration fee is $35, which is waived by USA Hockey for players aged 6 and under.

Advancement to House Mites:

  • Many children participate in the LTPW program for two years, particularly younger skaters.
  • Children must be 6 years old (prior to 12/31) with at least one year of LTP experience to be eligible to move up to House Mites.
  • Mid-year advancement from LTP to House Mites is only permitted with recommendation or approval from the LTP head coach. We recommend that age-eligible skaters begin their year in House Mites, rather than move mid-year.

House Mites:

Program overview:

  • This program is for boys and girls ages 6-8. (USA Hockey sets the birth year cut-off for each season at Dec 31.)
  • Designed for children with at least one year of organized hockey experience in Learn to Play or equivalent.
  • The House Mite program is important to player development.
  • Skating and puck skills are taught and reinforced while the fundamental elements of team/positional play, rules and games are learned.
  • The program is designed so that players can spend multiple years in House Mites
  • We recommend that players 8 and under consider a second year in the House Mite program before moving to travel hockey.
  • House Mites start with a clinic-style pre-season followed by a team season.
  • Team season includes team practices, inter-squad games between the HHA House Mite teams, and inter-association games between Hanover teams and other area House Mite teams.
  • Games are played on half-ice games with four skaters and a goalie on each side.
  • The House Mite Program plans to have four teams within the program this year.
  • Attendance at all practices is strongly encouraged. However, Hanover Hockey encourages young players to try other sports and activities. If a player will miss a practice or game, all HHA asks is that the player (or parent) notifies the coach in advance.
